OVERVIEW

Build the practical knowledge and confidence to contribute to fair, compliant and value-for-money government procurement.

Procurement Essentials introduces participants to the key stages of the procurement lifecycle—from defining a business need and approaching the market to evaluating offers, selecting a supplier and transitioning to contract management.

  • Government procurement decisions must achieve value for money while meeting expectations of fairness, transparency and accountability.

    This course provides participants with the knowledge to understand their role, recognise common risks and contribute to procurement processes that are well planned, appropriately documented and able to withstand scrutiny.

    Participants will learn to:

    • Navigate the key stages and responsibilities across the procurement lifecycle

    • Define a procurement need and develop clear requirements

    • Select an appropriate approach to market and apply value-for-money principles

    • Develop evaluation criteria and support fair and consistent supplier evaluation

    • Identify and manage procurement, probity and conflict-of-interest risks

    • Document procurement decisions and support the transition to contract management

  • This course is suitable for people who are new to government procurement or who contribute to procurement activities as part of their role, including:

    • Procurement and purchasing officers

    • Contract and project officers

    • Program and business support officers

    • Subject matter experts involved in procurement activities

    • Managers responsible for overseeing procurement

    • Consultants supporting government or public sector clients

  • There are no formal entry requirements. The course is designed for participants who work in, support or are preparing to undertake procurement activities within a government or public sector environment. No previous procurement experience or formal qualification is required.

  • The course combines facilitator-led instruction, interactive discussion, government procurement scenarios and applied activities.

  • Participants who complete the course will receive an ACFEC Certificate of Completion.

  • Procurement Essentials is available as a closed course for government departments, agencies and other public sector organisations.

    Course content can be tailored to reflect your organisation’s procurement policies, procedures, delegations and operating environment.
